Simulation Forum
The Simulation Forum is an extended technical session dedicated to the simulations performed within the group/section – usually FEA & CFD simulations in ANSYS & LS-Dyna.
Its purpose is to give us all an opportunity to:
- Present our simulation-related work in a detailed “quasi-exhaustive” way – no time constrains, a session can last 1-2 hours if needed
- Share & acquire ANSYS know-how – Learning is key to success
- Informally peer-review our calculations (as in software development teams) – it adds confidence and quality to our work
- Discuss and make bonds with our colleagues
- Promote synergies within STI, other departments, and eventually outside of CERN
All the past events can be found at the following Indico page: https://indico.cern.ch/category/9516/
Mattermost channel
Informal chat to ask simulation-related questions, share useful content or simply say hello to the section’s “simulators”: https://mattermost.web.cern.ch/en-sti-tcd/channels/tcd-simulation-channel

Course Material
As member of the STI-TCD section, you have automatic access to the section’s cernbox (EOS) project space. Multiple course material such as Ansys Meshing, LS-Dyna introduction or Ansys Advanced Heat Transfer can be found on the following address:
/eos/project/t/tcd/Course material/
Guideline to access ANSYS learning Hub: https://edms.cern.ch/document/2666407/1
Plugins & tools
In a global effort to streamline our simulation works, many of us often make dedicated scripts to make our life easier. You can find them on the following GitLab page of the section:
https://gitlab.cern.ch/SY_STI_TCD
Material Database (Under development)
At the moment the following sources of material data and properties are available:
- Total Materia (login with CERN email): https://www.totalmateria.com/
- CES Selector (available via remote connection to pcadsti.cern.ch*)
- MPDB (available via remote connection to pcadsti.cern.ch*)
- Section EOS (cernbox): /eos/project/t/tcd/Materials
- Section DFS: G:\Departments\SY\Groups\STI\TCD\0090-Knowledge_Material_R&D_Norms\0060-Material_Properties (to be deprecated -> migrated to EOS)
Careful usage of the available sources shall be made. The CAE engineer shall always ensure that the appropriate material data, respective sources and assumptions are well known and justified. Particularly, when using the XML (Ansys) models available in EOS and DFS. One is welcome to add/complement the available material data in EOS, however this shall first be discuss with the staff.
A more robust material database is under discussion/consideration.
*rdp. file for pcadsti.cern.ch available in /eos/project/t/tcd/pcadsti.rdp
Simulation Database
Currently, most of the past simulation files are stored in the personal TCDSYN server space of the person who run the calculations. In the future, either a common directory or an easy-to-search tool will be implemented to easily find and look at past simulation studies.
